One of the more surprising decisions in the past months’ designer merry-go-round was the ousting of Cédric Charlier from Cacharel; he was replaced by unknown designers Ling Liu and Dawei Sun. (They’re Chinese natives who met at the Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture.) By both retail and editorial accounts, Charlier was doing fine work. And as reported in WWD, the decision made by Cacharel president Jean Bousquet didn’t sit well with Massimo Ferretti, head of the French brand’s licensee, Aeffe—perhaps less than auspicious circumstances for Liu and Sun’s debut today.

After a lush romantic A/W10 collection that paid tribute to Fair Isle knits, Lou Dalton’s S/S11 presentation was a more subdued affair.
A sense of travel and fascination with different cultures has been a common thread running through the S/S11 season and for Dalton, she was inspired by the nomadic lifestyle of Romany people. There was something of the crumpled yet refined elegance of Lanvin in the relaxed silhouettes and deceptively casual layering. Dalton’s impeccable craftsmanship and passion for quality is indisputable and her latest collection boasted a vaguely ethnic print that enlivened proceedings and gave her artisitc fashion a raw edge.

Their Fall collection was as directional as it was wearable, a hit with editors and buyers alike, and this summer saw them open a new store on Houston Street stocked with their nicely priced not-so-basic basics. No surprise, then, that they were eager, as Wainwright said before the show, to push themselves again. But this time they didn’t quite find that sweet spot as reliably as usual.

Even before the intro for the inaugural song has subsided to give way to its beefy riff main body, Pulled Apart By Horses’ axe-man James Brown has haphazardly toppled into his amp set-up, sending heavy guitar rig equipment crashing to the floor. An enthusiastic cheers emanates from the bemused crowd, who are crammed awkwardly into this most strange of gig spaces. Indeed, the makeshift barriers that have seemingly been placed randomly to stop any fervent followers of the band spilling over exorbitant equipage, give the Dogfish Menswear shop an almost assertory air of authority. An authority that is soon broken by the action onstage.

New York – June 8th – The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) named David Neville and Marcus Wainwright for Rag & Bone menswear designer of the year 2010.
Rag & Bone is a label born out of the shared frustrations of Marcus Wainwright and David Neville not being able to buy the jeans they wanted to wear. They founded the company in 2002 with one very clear vision in mind: to make clothes that they and their friends would love to wear everyday. The men’s line launched in Spring 2004 in 4 stores in the US – with distribution increasing to over 120 stores for the men’s line and 160 stores for the women’s line worldwide.

With its bricolage of classic men’s fabrics and sumptuous decorative elements, Antonio Marras’ own collection in Milan was one-of-a-kind poetry. A “laboratorio,” he called it. It was a genuine pleasure to see some of the results of his experiments filter down to the Kenzo catwalk, in the languid interplay between feminine and masculine; the magpie trove of paillettes, buttons, and beads that decorated sober gray flannel; and the combinations of leopard and pinstripe.
